Detailed Information

Castle Island is not actually an island, but it is one of the best picnic spots near Boston. In 1928, Castle Island was connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land and thus, it is a peninsula. Located in South Boston on the shore of Boston Harbor, a visit to Castle Island combines history and recreation. Walk around and/or tour Fort Independence, then continue the day enjoying a picnic in the sun and swimming at one of the nearby beaches.

Note that dogs are not allowed on the beach from May through September.

Hours

Open hours from sunrise to sunset.

Parking

Parking is available in the lot near Fort Independence.  On street metered parking is available along the beach.
